Eva Luna Notes
The excerpt from the novel that you read were the beginning of the story and Walimai. The whole novel is a collection of stories of events that helped to shape Eva into the woman that she is today. The main theme of this novel is fortitude, or being able to over come obstacles that stand in your way; this can also be explained as always working hard even if times in life are difficult. Fortitude shows that no matter how bad things may get you still have to have the strength to keep going.
The first story that we read was an exposition, or background in formation, it told you about Eva's mother Consuelo, who was found as an infant by priests. Eva's mother had to basically raise herself. She had very few friends and the priests believed that if she was meant to live then a greater power would keep her alive. Many people would have withered in this kind of surrounding, but Consuelo thrived. She was able to be free and grow into her own person.
The next excerpt that we read was called Walimai. This is a section of Eva recalling or being told a story by Wailmai, or wind. He is explaining an important event in his life that has given him a greater understanding about the beliefs of his people. This belief is the power of names and how they should be respected. A common idea in this excerpt is why you should not speak without thinking.
The idea the Walimai's name means wind is unique to this story, because wind is a thing that a person cannot capture of confine. It can be used but it cannot be controlled. If you view this story with the idea that Walimai is the wind then you can easily understand why it would be impossible to capture and hold him.
In this text we are give the effect of three main conflicts generational, cultural, and traditional. The generational conflict can be seen when Walimai is talking about his children and how they disrespect the teachings of their elders. It is also seen when the young leave the village and are viewed as being dead. This shows the it is easier for the young the accept the changes in the world, the the older generations that want to stand firm the their traditions. The cultural conflicts can be seen through out the text. They are there to show the reader how first impressions can affect the way a people sees you, and is meant to teach readers how having a lack of respect for another culture can have sever consequences. The traditional conflicts are seen from the beginning of the story to the end. It is best shown has Walimai and the woman become close to one another and how he does not want to send her spirit a way from him, but in the end he ultimately upholds the traditions of his tribe.
