Notes
Marquez is a very well known author. His most popular works are Love in the Time of Cholera and A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings. His stories usually contain one of these four themes: ritual, honor, superstition, and death. His writing style was very much influenced by his up bringing. He was raised by his grandparents, until he was eight years old when his grandfather passed away and his family moved to Columbia. Marquez's grandparent would tell him stories. His grandfather would tell him stories his time in war, while his grandmother would tell him supernatural stories. This is very well possible where he acquired his unique style of magical realism.
In the short story The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship Marquez uses a writing style known as stream of consciousness. Stream of Consciousness refers to an uninterrupted and unhindered collection and occurrence of thoughts and ideas in the conscious mind. In literature, the phrase refers to the flow of these thoughts, with reference to a particular character's thinking process. This literary device is usually used in order to provide a narrative in the form of the character's thoughts instead of using dialogue or description.
The Last Voyage of the Ghost Ship is a psychological story. It follows the progression of the main character as he develops from an ordinary young boy into an assertive man. Marquez explains in this story that for a person to be great in life that they have to have courage. They must have the courage to believe in themselves, to stand against the crowd, and to never back down. Without courage, determination and action a person will never stand out from the rest and it will be impossible for them to make their mark on the world, because without courage, determination and action people would never stand up against others, they will never stand for their beliefs, and they will never make an impact in the world.
The voyage that is mentioned in the title does not truly reference the ship but stands for the boy. The voyage is his journey from the innocence of childhood to the experience of adulthood. That is why the theme of the story is the journey one takes from innocence to experience. As a person matures they begin to see the world in a new way. They no longer see the world from the rose colored glasses of childhood and innocence, but the truth of the world. Like the narrator of the story who had to grow and develop throughout the story, we must do the same as we grow. The narrator learned to speak up about what he believed in and he learned the world can be a hard place when he lost his mother leaving him an orphan. After that he learned that he could survive on his own and that he did not have to rely on others to take care of him when he stole food rather than rely on others to feed him. Then he learned that the world could be a cruel place when he was beaten by the village for yelling and scaring them. Due to all of these experiences he could have withdrawn himself from the world, but instead he decided to show them who he truly was. He stood up for himself, he believed in himself, and he showed the village that he was more than they could ever understand.
At the end the story also implies that an individual needs to ignite their inner self before going for their dreams then he or she need to have determination to reach the peak and dedicate all of their efforts without losing confidence in ones self. It is the lose of ones confidence that causes them to shy away from their goals and ambitions. Marquez uses this story to give the youth of this world away to see that they can become who they dream to be as long as they hold on to the drive to obtain it, and understand that there will be ups and downs in their path. One of these obstacles will be the naysayers. These people will tell you that you cannot do it, that there is no way for some reason or another. When this happens remember Marquez and his story about a young man who would stop at nothing to show his village how he truly was.
