Here are some images of mead halls to help inspire you.
- Construct a Mead Hall
- Research Anglo/Saxon culture and the importance of mead halls to the Anglo/Saxon community.
- 1 page paper
- Present your finding to the class in a 4-5 min. presentation:
- Information and Mead Hall
- Mead Hall
- 3-D structure must be constructed
- not a paper drawing
- Benches
- Rafters
- Thrown Area
- Shields
- Fire Pit
- Details of gold and ivory placed into the woodwork
- Must be able to look inside the structure easily
- Have aspects of Herot in your creation, such as Grendel’s arm.
- Grendel’s Monologue
- You will need to look back at the scenes from the epic that had Grendel in it. Place yourself in his shoes, so to speak, and write what he might have been thinking and feeling during the scenes.
- Scenes
- Grendel coming to Herot.
- Grendel attacking the Danes.
- Grendel and Beowulf’s battle
- Grendel dying in his lair.
- You will also need to incorporate kennings, alliteration, and assonance into your monolog.
- Kennings, you will need to incorporate three kennings into the text.
- Alliteration, you will need to have three examples.
- Assonance, you will need to have at least one example of assonance in the text.
- Be prepared to present your monologue one the day that it is due, in front of the class. You may use props and costumes to help you present your monologue. Remember that you will need to be creative and that you need to show emotion when you are presenting.
- Have a copy of the monologue to give to the teacher before you begin.
- Video re-make
- In this project you will pick on of the scenes from the epic and remake it into a modern interpretation of Beowulf.
- You must follow the same rhyme scheme and plot as the original text.
- You are allowed to work with a group of three to four people to create the video.
- If more people are required you must ask for permission and get it cleared by the teacher.
- The video will need to be at least five minutes in length and it must be able to be shown in class.
- Bring the film in before the due date to insure that it will play properly.
- In the film you will also need to display the values of the Anglo-Saxon people.
- Get all scenes approved by teacher before you begin filming or creating your script.
- Have scripts ready to turn in on the day that the project is due along with the video.
- Soundtrack
- You will create a 15 song soundtrack for the entire story. The songs must represent the action and feelings that are taking place in the epic.
- You will create a CD case for your CD. On the front of the case you will create a creative cover that embodies the story. On the back of the case will be the list of the songs and an explanation of what scene goes with each song.
- If you are using a song that is made by another person make sure you give them credit for their work.
- On a separate sheet of paper you will explain why you used/choose each of the songs for the soundtrack and how they are representative of the plot/action taking place in the scene.
- On the day that the project is due you will have three of the fifteen songs that you choose ready to play for the class.
- You will tell the class the title of the song, what scene it symbolizes, and why you chose it.
- You must bring in a CD with all 15 songs on it the day that the project is due.
- The class will only hear a sample of the music but you will be graded on the entire CD. So, please make sure the CD works before you bring it into class.
- I would also suggest saving the music to a file on a flash drive just encase something happens.
