- In the Time of the Butterflies - Since you are reading this novel during March, which is Women's History Month, you are to create a mock event to honor the four sisters. You will come up with a location, advertisements, information about the women, and explanation of how these women helped start a rebellion.
- In the Time of the Butterflies - Stage an in-class production of In the Time of the Butterflies. You will work with a group of 3-4 students to adapt a scene of the novel.
- Both - Create a photo gallery of the Dominican Republic. Include people, activities, and scenes (illustrating both buildings and landscapes). Display the gallery in the classroom or school library. Feature Finca alta Gracia, the organic coffee farm that Julia Alvarez supports with her husband, Bill Eichner.
- Both - Display illustrations of the styles of dress and architecture of the Dominican Republic in the middle of the 20th century; play recordings of music by Dominican composers; give poetry readings from Spanish-speaking writers in both the original Spanish and an accompanying English translation
- How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents – Create a pamphlet to help a foreign student fit in at your school. Include a map of the school, fun places to hang out, explanations for different phrases that the student body uses, these must be school appropriate. You will need to make these students feel welcomed and accepted in this brochure.
- How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents – Write a 1 ½ paper about the Cuban Missile Crises. This paper will cover the history behind the event and its’ impact on the world. You will need to have in-text citations as well as a work cited page. This page does not count towards your 1 ½ pages.
